Esri Backs SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA Service

SAP Cloud Platform backed by Esri

SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA Service is esteemed to be a game-changing way to build intelligent applications and analytics solutions on one data copy in the cloud built with a Multi-model architecture to process any type of data in one system and combine advanced analytics techniques for deeper insights.

The global leader in location intelligence, Esri, now supports SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA service, making a record as the first-ever database as a service that is fully supported by Esri ArcGIS technology. SAP SE announced the partnership during the Esri User Conference being held July 8–12 in San Diego.

With SAP HANA as a service, organizations can now run SAP HANA as the underlying multi-model database service for the ArcGIS system of record and take advantage of increased performance, lower total cost of ownership and easier integration of enterprise data with spatial data either on-premise, in the cloud or in a hybrid deployment.

Gerrit Kazmaier, SAP Senior Vice President of SAP HANA and Analytics, said:

“Our partnership with Esri brings over 20 years of co-innovation to our broad joint customer base. Through our latest co-innovation efforts, the SAP HANA service is the first and only database as a service serving as the foundation of the enterprise geodatabase with ArcGIS. With Esri ArcGIS powered by SAP HANA now supporting on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments, customers can choose their preferred deployment option to gain substantial performance and scale improvements, while connecting to a much broader set of internal and external data sources for much more powerful spatial analytics and decision-making.”

The joint solution from SAP and Esri consolidates IT landscapes for lower administrative costs and total cost of ownership through a fully integrated spatial analytics and advanced visualizations in one multi-model database management system. Businesses now have the capability to achieve full integration of enterprise and spatial data for greater insights, improved business decisions and quicker innovation having SAP HANA service that has a supported enterprise geodatabase with Esri’s ArcGIS Enterprise and ArcGIS Pro.

The Making of a Smart City

With the objective of improving municipal service delivery and community collaboration through spatial insight, The City of San Diego is now transforming into a smart city utilizing powerful capabilities of SAP Business Suite software and Esri ArcGIS Enterprise.

SAP and Esri are working with the city’s implementation partner Critigen, a full-lifecycle Geospatial systems integrator, to achieve interoperability between their platforms through data integration, advanced analytics, and dynamic map-based applications. The joint project aims to reduce overall technology costs, improve performance and provide accurate and timely information for making more informed decisions throughout the city.

City of San Diego’s Chief Innovation Officer Jonathan Behnke has recognized the benefits the city gets from the SAP and Esri partnership. He cited:

“For example, our firefighters can better plan and respond to calls. Within a few weeks a team from SAP, Critigen, Esri and Quartic Solutions built a map viewer showing hydrant status from our operational and GIS systems of record — SAP Business Suite and Esri ArcGIS both running on SAP HANA. The new tool improves efficiency and helps make the city safer.”

Quick-start Experience and Spatial Hackathon

SAP, Esri, and AWS will soon offer a brand-new experience with the SAP and Esri quick-start experience, a guided experience that comes with everything you need to explore the pure power and performance of Esri ArcGIS Enterprise with SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA service, which is SAP’s flagship multi-model in-memory database-as-a-service. It includes a 30-day free trial of SAP HANA service, Esri ArcGIS Enterprise, and SAP Analytics Cloud. Customers will also have access to video tutorials, sample demographic data and maps, and quick-start content as part of the experience. The SAP and Esri quick-start experience will be launched in September 2019.

Following the success of last year’s SAP and Esri sponsored hackathon held in Palm Springs, this year, there will be two hackathon events to be held in two countries: August 14–16 in São Paulo, Brazil, and October 16–18 in ‘s Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. During the hackathon, participants will have access to SAP HANA spatial services, SAP HANA, SAP Cloud Platform, SAP Analytics Cloud, SAP Leonardo ML APIs, Esri ArcGIS APIs, Esri ArcGIS Enterprise, Esri Arc GIS Pro, Esri GeoEvent Server, Esri Insights for ArcGIS.

The first SAP + Esri Spatial Hackathon held last March 2018 hosted GIS Developers, Enterprise Architects, Data Scientists, BI Developers, and students (supported by technical experts from both SAP and Esri) who coded for 40+ hours on solutions that included both SAP HANA spatial and Esri ArcGIS, even SAP Analytics Cloud. Finalists and winners created solutions for water quality, smart solar grids, and earthquake impact prediction.
