Rossing Uranium Implements S/4HANA

Rossing Uranium in Namibia is the longest-running uranium mines. It is also one of the largest open-pit uranium mines in the world and contributes to the country’s mining industry which has been essential to the Namibian economy, with a 12% contribution to its GDP in 2017. According to reports released for 2018, the mine contributed to 4.1% of the world’s primary production of uranium oxide.

Now, the top Namibian mine launched a stand-alone ERP solution to increase efficiency and improve the visibility of operations. Given the advantages that can be delivered by SAP S/4HANA, there is no doubt that this will effectively meet said goals.

Rio Tinto, Rossing’s majority shareholder, sold its controlling stake to the China National Uranium Corporation Limited (CNUC) in November 2018. The mine’s SAP ERP-system was hosted in the Rio Tinto environment in Australia. It was critical to the business for Rossing’s IT system to be separated from Rio Tinto’s quickest way possible without impacting the operations.

Marita van der Merwe, manager of Information Systems & Technologies at Rossing said:

“We had no choice: we had to implement a stand-alone SAP ERP solution in an extremely tight time-frame. At the same time, we saw the opportunity to put in place an IT architecture that supports the business need to be agile and responsive in volatile markets, deliver improved real-time information for business cost control, run our operations more efficiently than ever, and reduce enterprise operating risk.”

The Rossing Uranium picked a cloud-based and hosted environment and chose to implement on SAP S/4HANA hosted in South Africa by EPI-USE Labs. This decision was expected to reduce the long-term total cost of ownership. The project was implemented on the 1st of November, which went live on the 1st of April.

Additionally, Van der Merwe said that the decision to choose EPI-USE and Deloitte as the implementation partners was based on the robust tendering process.

Cameron Beveridge, Regional Director of Southern Africa for SAP Africa, said:

“The ability of SAP S/4HANA to give organisations speed, agility, innovation, and scalability is part of our strategy. Customers like Rössing Uranium are telling us SAP S/4HANA is mission-critical to their businesses because it optimises their digital transformation strategy; improves agility, visibility, and innovation; and reduces costs and time-to-process information. This helps them not only address today’s challenges, but meet tomorrow’s opportunities with flexibility, speed, and insight.”
