The US presidential race is hotting up, and SAP has partnered with news agency Reuters to provide extra tools to deepen its data journalism on this important event.

Under the partnership, Reuters has deployed the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service as the new backbone for the Reuters Polling Explorer, enabling the analysis of 100 million survey responses for quicker and more efficient reporting of public opinion. Reuters also plans to continue to integrate SAP HANA into its workflow, and will seek to adopt its advanced capabilities, including built-in predictive analytics, to enhance the performance of Polling Explorer and its user experience.

Providing voters with the chance to simulate the role of a presidential candidate, Reuters has used SAP Mobile Platform to build Reuters’ new White House Run mobile app. It uses predictive analytics and Reuters polling data to help people understand the electability of different political personas and compare results with their friends, as well as providing election news coverage and other features.

“Digital technologies are transforming the American vote into the digital voter, and redefining how media organisations create engaging content and experiences,” said Jennifer Morgan, president, SAP North America.

“With SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud as the new backbone for Reuters Polling Explorer, Reuters can shape data-driven stories about the 2016 US presidential election faster. And with SAP Mobile Platform behind its new interactive voter experience app, Reuters can give consumers its fact-driven news experience anywhere, anytime.”

Reuters editorial teams also now have access to SAP Lumira software, which can be used for analytics and insight to allow journalists to explore data such as polling results and easily create visual stories, featuring data visualisations.

“The US presidential election is one of the most important events this year, and data plays a key role in understanding it,” said Daniel Mandell, chief revenue officer, Reuters Media.

“Voters rely on our coverage to make informed decisions. Partnering with SAP has allowed us to build a technological platform that enables our editorial team to quickly and efficiently sort through a mountain of data. This technology will let us deliver to readers this independently produced, unbiased news and information that they expect from Reuters.”
